Turkey Day Tip #20: ENJOY THE DAY!

The Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving

(Edgar Albert Guest, 1881-1959)

It may be I am getting old and like too much to dwell
Upon the days of bygone years, the days I loved so well;
But thinking of them now I wish somehow that I could know
A simple old Thanksgiving Day, like those of long ago,
When all the family gathered round a table richly spread,
With little Jamie at the foot and grandpa at the head,
The youngest of us all to greet the oldest with a smile,
With mother running in and out and laughing all the while.

It may be I’m old-fashioned, but it seems to me to-day
We’re too much bent on having fun to take the time to pray;
Each little family grows up with fashions of its own;
It lives within a world itself and wants to be alone.
It has its special pleasures, its circle, too, of friends;
There are no get-together days; each one his journey wends,
Pursuing what he likes the best in his particular way,
Letting the others do the same upon Thanksgiving Day.

I like the olden way the best, when relatives were glad
To meet the way they used to do when I was but a lad;
The old home was a rendezvous for all our kith and kin,
And whether living far or near they all came trooping in
With shouts of “Hello, daddy!” as they fairly stormed the place
And made a rush for mother, who would stop to wipe her face
Upon her gingham apron before she kissed them all,
Hugging them proudly to her breast, the grownups and the small.

Then laughter rang throughout the home, and, Oh, the jokes they told;
From Boston, Frank brought new ones, but father sprang the old;
All afternoon we chatted, telling what we hoped to do,
The struggles we were making and the hardships we’d gone through;
We gathered round the fireside. How fast the hours would fly–
It seemed before we’d settled down ’twas time to say good-bye.
Those were the glad Thanksgivings, the old-time families knew
When relatives could still be friends and every heart was true.

The Wife can do Leftovers! November 27, 2008

Turkey Day Tip #19: Keeping all those leftovers SAFE! fridge1

To help keep Turkey Day guests and their leftovers safe, here are four key rules to remember:

Rule #1: Refrigerate or freeze prepared foods, leftovers, and other perishables within two hours of preparation or purchase. If your guests are going to be delayed for a short time, keep hot foods in the oven, checking the internal temperature to be sure it stays at least 140°F.

Rule #2:Be sure your refrigerator is set at 40°F. Harmful food borne organisms can grow if temperatures are kept above 40°F.

Rule #3: If you freeze leftovers, never attempt to thaw them at room temperature. Instead, place them in the refrigerator. You can also use a microwave to thaw and reheat food more quickly if it will be consumed right away.

Rule #4: When storing leftover foods, get the temperature of the food down rapidly to discourage any type of bacterial growth. Separate large amounts of leftovers into smaller containers, as this will allow for more rapid cooling of the foods once they are placed in the refrigerator. It is okay to place hot food directly in the refrigerator, provided large quantities of food are divided into shallow containers for quicker cooling.

shopping-1Turkey Day Tip #18: Surviving BLACK FRIDAY!

sale0906Maybe you are a brave wife and you actually attempt to be one of the survivors of BLACK FRIDAY! If so, here are a few tips to help you have Shopping “WIFE” Survival!

1) Buy the paper on Thursday! It will be FULL of adds and all kinds of shopping wife goodies!  Be sure to clip your needed coupons! This is also a great time to do comparisons! Be a smart wife and find the best buy before you make the purchase! Many stores will post their HUGE Black Friday savings on their website as well!

2) Prepare to be ready early! Some stores open at 4:00AM! Get your wife beauty sleep, volunteer family members to do the dishes and get a nap in!

shopping-cart3) Travel Light! Black Friday is not the best day to bust out your HUGE adorable trendy wife purse/bag. Keep it simple and small. Be organized so when you hit the check-out you are ready to roll!

4) Leave slow travelers and shoppers that like to “browse” at home. There is no time to mess around! Black Friday shoppers take their purpose seriously! If possible build a Black Friday Wife Force team to assure all parties get all their needs filled! Wife 1 & 2 goes to Target, Wife 3 & 4 to Wal-Mart, etc., etc.

5) Make a list of what you need! Just because you can buy 25 pairs of holiday socks for a deal doesn’t mean you need them. Don’t come home with wife shopping regrets and piles to return!

6) MAKE IT FUN for your team or even for yourself! Dress comfortably, pow-wow before you head out to the stores, fresh coffee or soda for all and ENJOY!
