A wife and more APRON talk… April 15, 2010

I found this at THE OPEN PANTRY (a delightful little blog by Emily that is full of food and baking inspiration)!

APRONS:

I don’t think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes.

For new couples (or for those that have been a “couple” for a while) this site is fun to browse (full of articles, ideas and great “married couple” resources). It covers everything from home decor, to cooking, to finances and more.

The Wife “hearts” Sublime Stitching! April 10, 2010

This wife has been busy as queen-bee! Researching, reading, cleaning and baking…to have a fresh batch of POSTS next week! In the mean time, if you are a bored wife on a Saturday…head over to SUBLIME Stitching and melt (created and owned by Jenny Hart)! This site makes me WISH I knew how to embroider (it is just that cool).

Someday when I have a full week to hang out and not be distracted I am going to learn! Another cool wife (who happens to be my grandma) is pretty  handy at the trait…I am sure she would love to teach a fellow-wife! However…something tells me see might not see eye-to-eye on my selections from Sublime Stitching! Especially when I present her with the “ROARING TWENTIES TRANSFERS” or the “BOWLING BETTIES” to work with! Oh my goodness they are just so cute!

A Wife and her missing KitchenAid… April 6, 2010

The wife and the hubby have been moving the last few weeks (actually more like the hubby, bless his sweet heart…he did most of the packing and moving with family and friends…the wife was busy)! Officially, camp has been made and we are basking in the NEW! Our new home is lovely…the unpacking is not lovely. Piles and boxes and totes oh my…it feels as though it will never end.

However, this wife is missing one item the most…it is the KitchenAid mixer (it is hidden in the chaos of piles). Is that an odd thing for a wife to miss? It isn’t so much that I miss the mixer, it is the comfort of baking I am missing, which directly connects me to the KitchenAid.  Baking makes the wife happy…especially when the treats go with hubby to work (they make his co-workers happy).

SOON SOON SOON this wife’s kitchen will be in full swing again, baking some goodies (including recipes to share with you) are at the top of the wife’s list!

Please bake something and send some baking love to this wife!
